Jack in the Box is back in Michigan. Our first restaurant in the state opened in Battle Creek this June, a second is under construction in Westland, and a five-restaurant development agreement is signed for metro Detroit. We are awarding markets across the entire state, from Grand Rapids to the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Michigan added nearly 28,000 residents last year, and for the first time since at least 1990, more people moved in from other states than moved out. If you have multi-unit or quick-service experience, there is room to build here.
Growing Again
Michigan added 27,922 residents between July 2024 and July 2025 and remains the 10th most populous state, according to Census Bureau estimates analyzed by the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics.
People Are Moving In
For the first time since at least 1990, more people moved to Michigan from other states than moved out. The state posted a net domestic gain of 1,796 residents in the year ending July 2025.

Is Jack in the Box Actually Growing in Michigan Right Now?

Our Battle Creek restaurant opened on June 15, 2026 at 2588 Capital Avenue SW, just off I-94. It is the first Jack in the Box operating in Michigan in decades.

In February 2024 we announced our entry into Michigan with franchisee Niraj Patel, with restaurants planned across Kalamazoo, Calhoun, and Kent counties in West Michigan.

Why Is Michigan a Strong State for a Restaurant Franchise?
Michigan pairs a consumer base of more than ten million people with a hospitality industry that employs more than 450,000 people and generates nearly $44.6 billion in annual sales, according to the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association. The state grew again last year, and household income rose with it.
The Census Bureau put Michigan's population at 10,127,884 as of July 2025, an increase of 27,922 residents over the year. Median household income reached $72,389 in 2024, up 1.6 percent from the year before in inflation-adjusted dollars. Leisure and hospitality employers reported 428,800 jobs statewide in 2024, and the accommodation and food services sector contributed $21.2 billion to state GDP that same year.
The broader numbers hold up too. Michigan's real GDP reached $568.9 billion in 2025, up 1.2 percent from the year before and the state's highest on record. Manufacturing contributed $100.1 billion of that, more than any other industry, and manufacturing runs on shift schedules. Our full menu is available all day, and our restaurants are built around the drive-thru, which is exactly what our current store models are designed for.
Those are the baseline conditions. What we review next is specific to each trade area: traffic counts, site availability, and the operator. Detroit itself added about 5,000 residents in the year ending July 2025, its third straight year of gains.
